District Information

Highland provides 24/7 emergency medical services and transport for both Genesee Fire and Foothills Fire Districts, including the communities of Genesee, Lookout Mountain and Idledale.  Our station, located at Highway 40 and Lookout Mountain Road, houses our 3 ALS ambulances and 1 rescue vehicle, providing a central location for responding to our 33.5 square mile district.  The District also covers five open space areas and 8 miles of Interstate 70.  We run about 750 calls annually and are primarily staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers.

Position Description

Highland Rescue Team is hiring a training director. This captain-level position is responsible for all aspects of member training, including continuing education classes, shift-based training, interagency training and new member orientation classes. The training coordinator also spends
24 hours per week as our on-call paramedic on a 911 emergency response ambulance. The remaining 16 hours per week will focus on training and associated administrative tasks with a flexible schedule.

Position Requirements

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license
  3. Must maintain a favorable driving record and maintain insurability with district insurance carriers for the operation of emergency vehicles
  4. Proficient with basic computer applications including MS Office, Google Docs & Gmail 
  5. Must have flexible schedule to allow for training on days, evenings, weekdays and weekends
  6. Minimum certifications:
    1. Colorado paramedic certification
    2. AHA ACLS or equivalent
    3. AHA BLS or equivalent
    4. ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800
  7. Preferred certifications:
    1. Instructor for any of the listed certifications
    2. PHTLS or equivalent
    3. Pediatric certification such as PALS, PEPP or EPC
    4. CCP-C
    5. FP-C
  8. Experience working as a 911 paramedic.  You will need to be comfortable working as the sole ALS provider on scenes.
  9. Preferred Experience:
    1. Experience working with or as a volunteer.  You should understand the complexity of working in a combination department
    2. Emergency service supervisory experience
    3. Teaching experience
  10. College degree preferred

Job Expectations

  • Arrange for continuing education of EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics
  • Regularly assess member skills and knowledge
  • Coordinate shift-based training for members
  • Lead new member orientation process, with help from experienced members
  • Act as mentor for new and experienced EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics
  • Act as lead medical provider on emergency calls
  • Maintain all required certifications
  • Work with members to help them maintain their certifications
  • Provide direction to other personnel and make decisions concerning medical situations
  • Treat patients appropriately, following applicable medical protocols
  • Accurately and legibly complete required reports and forms
  • Ensure ambulances, supplies and equipment are in good working order
  • Assist other team members as necessary and ensures they are familiar with all aspects of their job
  • Help educate the public about issues relating to the provision of EMS in the district
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while on duty
